The Romeo High School (RHS) student council and students will hold their annual Charity Week Feb. 1-5.

Money raised from different events held during the week will benefit The Rainbow Connection, in particular two local children with cancer.

Five year old Penelope, who is currently in remission, and three year old, Aiden, who has leukemia, want to go to Disney World. Students at RHS want to make that happen.

“The student council chose this charity because the students are super passionate about helping children,” said Amber Fountain, a counselor at RHS and staff co-advisor for Charity Week. “They really like to meet the kids.”

Charity Week kicks off with a fundraiser at the Washington Township Buffalo Wild Wings, who will donate a portion of that day’s sales. On Wednesday, a dodgeball tournament will take place at the end of the school day and the popular Mr. Bulldog Contest will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. This year some of the male RHS teachers plan to take part in the contest. The cost to attend is $5.

Thursday’s boys JV basketball game, which starts at 5:30 p.m., will feature a gift basket raffle. Fountain said students have collected items from the community and local merchants to fill a number of baskets for the raffle.

“They have some really nice things,” she said.

A “miracle minute” will also take place at the basketball game. Students will pass buckets through the stands to collect as much pocket change from spectators as possible during the one-minute challenge.

Friday’s Charity Week assembly will also feature a miracle minute. Penny wars will take place all week throughout the school.
Fountain said the sale of t-shirts is also a fundamental part of their fundraising. This year’s rainbow tie-dyed t-shirts are currently available in all sizes at both RHS and the Romeo Engineering and Technology Center. The shirts are $15 and also act as a free ticket to all of the sporting events during the week.

A Charity Week Dance will wrap things up on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 7-10 p.m. at the high school.

In addition to taking part in the activities, monetary donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the school offices. This year’s goal is to raise at least $15,000.
