FEB. 18 ISSUE ANSWERS: When the Romeo State Police was first used in 1936, the State Police operated similar to the military. Only males could join and they had to ask permission to get married from the post commander. Most of the troopers slept at the post so what is currently now the Romeo Historical Society archives room was full of beds. A shower and toilets were available. I have heard stories from troopers that a patrol from Romeo went on horseback to a hotel in Imlay City. Then after with an overnight stay in a hotel they returned to Romeo the next day. There are no photos of this room arrangement, but the historical society has acquired a folding bed/cot that was more recently used during larger training sessions. As you can see, later the sleeping area became offices for the many troopers that worked in this room. When females joined the State Police, the shower room was converted into a locker room for them.
