SEPTEMBER 22 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This 1934 Westinghouse Turnover Toaster was given as a wedding gift to Josephine and Raymond Daugherty in August of that year. It is Art Deco in design. R.M.D. Electric toasters were available in the 1890’s and were given to women to encourage them to connect their homes to the local power plants. In 1910, ladies in Romeo requested that the electric power plant operate on Tuesday and Thursday forenoon so they can use their new electric irons and [toasters.] Romeo Observer. Before this the local Romeo power plant only operated at night for lighting in the home. This is a “Turnover” toaster. That means that a turn of the side door flipped the toast to heat the other side. The patent for the first automatic turnover toaster was in Lloyd Copeman’s name in 1914. This is the first toaster that “turned the toast.” The patent was in Lloyd’s wife’s name, not Lloyd’s. Family oral history is that she and Lloyd were window shopping and they saw a toaster in the window. She mentioned to Lloyd that he should be able to invent a toaster that would turn the toast. Hazel is said to have made the first model out of hairpins. The patent was then assigned to Lloyd. Lloyd Copeman also invented the electric stove. Westinghouse used both patents for the next 17 years. Kent Copeman, Lloyd’s grandson. 1913-The local Edison store gave demonstrations on the new “flameless cooker” [electric stove.] Romeo Observer
