Mary Ann Schaufler, 88, of Washington Township, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 17, 2026. Born on May 20, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, she lived a life marked by devotion to her family, her faith, her community, and the many people whose lives she touched with kindness and grace.
Mary Ann was a dedicated mother and grandmother whose family meant everything to her. She was known for her steady presence, her warm heart, and her ability to make others feel cared for and welcome. She was excellent with numbers and took great pride balancing the checkbook to the very last penny. Her careful attention to detail and her sense of responsibility were matched by her deep love for the people around her.
Her faith was one of the guiding forces of her life. Mary Ann was a devoted member of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, where she found strength, friendship, and purpose. She shared her love of music as a choir member of 57 years, lending her voice to the worship community she so dearly valued. She was also active in the Comfort Makers Blanket group, where she helped make blankets for veterans, offering comfort through her time and compassion.
Mary Ann also played an important role in the Romeo Community School District for 27 years. There, she not only nourished high school students but also became a trusted support system and someone they could talk to. Her kindness, patience, and genuine concern left a lasting impression on generations of students. Even today, many remember her for the encouragement she gave and the comfort she offered during important moments in their lives.
She leaves to mourn her beloved children: William Schaufler of Bruce Township, John (Melanie) Schaufler of Port Charlotte, Florida, Anne Marie (Steve) Hideg of Summerfield, Florida and Jody (Joseph) DeSmit of Chesterfield. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Justin (Kasia) Schaufler, Adam Schaufler, Tyler Cupp, Blake DeSmit, Chelsea Schaufler, Jada DeSmit, Ally Schaufler, Regina Diminick, and Genevieve Dominick.
