The family of Art Sprio were on hand Aug. 8 at the Washington Township Senior Center where the Michigan Wood Carvers presented him with a hand-carved veteran’s cane. Not in any order are: Nathanael, Isaiah, Caleb and Elizabella Komas (great-grandchildren) Christina Komas (grandchild) Victoria, Max and Emma-Rose Frangedakis (grandchildren) Pete (Art’s son) and Michele Sprio (daughter-in-law) and Dennis Sprio (Art’s son). Members of the woodcarver group meet at the senior center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and present carved canes to area veterans. Sprio is a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marines. He served in the Pacific Theater as a part of the 1st Marines Division, 164th Regiment, 1st Combat Engineers from Sept. 1945 to Sept. 1946. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, A World War II Victory Medal and Sharpshooter Medal.
