In the top photo, veterans from Armada AmVets Post 93 lead the Armada Memorial Day Parade down North Avenue on May 28. Members of Cub Scout Pack 85, pictured in the bottom photo, were among the many groups following the veterans. The veterans were continuing a tradition that dates back to the Civil War. In 1871, Michigan made “Decoration Day” an official state holiday and by 1890, every northern state had followed suit. In 1968, Congress passed a law that designated the last Monday of May as Memorial Day, creating a uniform nationwide day for people to remember service men and women who gave their lives for their country.
