Frederick (Fred) J. Backenstose, 91, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, March 13, 2023. He was born June 4, 1931, in Romeo, the son of Frederick and Pearl Backenstose.
After serving in the Air Force, he met and married Mary Louise (Mary Lou) Cvetetic, his loving wife of 68 years. Together they raised five of their six children in Almont. While in Michigan, Fred was self-employed in the excavation business. He enjoyed skiing and taught skiing at Mount Grampion. He received his private pilot license with his instrument rating endorsement. Later they moved to Sheridan Wyoming where they lived for 30 years and raised their youngest son. While In Sheridan, Fred was employed by the United States Forest Service working in the Big Horn Mountains and after retiring worked at the Little Goose Ranch. Because of his love of flying and planes, Fred spent years building a KR-2 experimental aircraft, which is still flying today.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou.
He is survived by his six children, Rick, Julie, Mitchell, Sue Ann, Lisa, and Kristofor; and granddaughter, Annie.
Interment of Fred and Mary Lou’s ashes will be 11 a.m., July 14 at Powell Cemetery in Washington Township with military honors to follow.
