
Arnold Gerald Hofer, 87, of Lewiston, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village in Gaylord. He was born May 20, 1927 in Detroit, the son of Harold and Henrietta (Cook) Hofer. On Nov. 24, 1949, he married Shirley Hellebuyck in Detroit.
Mr. Hofer served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. The couple raised four children in Armada and owned a cabin in Lewiston since 1975, permanently moving to Lewiston in 1990. Arnold was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and past usher. He was a member of the American Vets in Armada and the American Legion Post 198 in Lewiston. He retired in 1986 from Ford Motor Company’s Sterling Heights Gear and Axle Plant after 34 years as supervisor. He also drove vegetable trucks and school bus. When not working, Arnold used to love to play golf and was on various leagues. He also had a love for horses. Above all, he valued the time he spent with his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Hofer of Lewiston; son, Gary (Mimi) Hofer of Traverse City; daughters, Catherine Hofer of Lewiston, Diane (Bob) Schluentz of Allenton, and Donna (James) Quandt of Johannesburg; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald (Kathy) Hofer of Mount Clemens and Richard (Kim) Hofer of St. Clair Shores; and sister, Joann (Ed) Cannon of Vero Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Henrietta Hofer; son, Daniel; brothers, Norman, Fritz, Bob; and sisters, Lorraine Patino; Jean Hofer; and Susie Terrebru.
Private graveside service for Mr. Hofer was scheduled for Monday, April 13, 2020 at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery with the Rev. Al Pillarelli officiating.
