Marcella Gail Smith, 80, of Washington Township, formerly Lapeer, died peacefully in the presence of her loving children Sunday April 19, 2020. She was born Oct. 15, 1939 in Piedmont, Ala. to parents George and Vivian (McCord) Sanford. Gail married Douglas Redwood Smith on Oct. 16, 1961 in Pontiac.
Her life was an adventure as evidenced by fond memories she shared each and every day sometimes over her favorite chocolate martini.
Gail was a champion of education for the developmentally disabled, as a paraprofessional at the former Woodside School and later a coach at Team Work, Lapeer. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Lapeer. Gail loved spending time with children, especially her grandchildren of whom Gramma Gail was so proud. She was a kind, devoted and generous matriarch. Her astute wit, life wisdom and robust laugh will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her children: Duane (Jen) Smith of Dewitt, Joel (Susie) Smith of Romeo, Kellie (Terry St. Pierre) of Hollywood, Fla.; grandchildren, Mason, Jack, Joel, Samuel, Katie, Luke and Mollie as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gail was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas; sister, Georgiana (Dennis) Tracy as well as her afore mentioned parents.
The family is having private graveside prayers, officiated by Fr. Brian Hurley. Mrs. Smith will be buried next to her husband at Mount Hope Cemetery, Lapeer. They are considering public memorial services in the future, please be sure to reach out to the family in the meantime to express your sympathy.
