Glenn Smith Finley, III passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at 75 years of age. Devoted husband to the love of his life, Ann (they just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary) and doting father of Gary, Kirk (Maggie), Melissa (John), and the late Kelly Finley. Proud “Granddad” to Jackson, Levi, and Evy. Loving big brother to Patricia “Trish” J. Finley, Marylee J. Worley, and the late Radcliffe J. Finley.
Born an “Army brat” to COL. Glenn S. Finley, Jr., and Patricia J. Finley on Sept. 17, 1944; his early years were spent living abroad in Germany. At age 17, he attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and then Bowling Green University, where he studied Physics, German, and Mathematics – he was the smartest person we knew. He worked in Foreign Intelligence at TACOM, retiring in 2002 as a Technical Writer/Editor after 36 years of service.
He was humble, witty, and charming, with a dry sense of humor that could make even the hardest person crack. He cared deeply for the special needs population, especially his “Kelly Belly.” Animals and children couldn’t resist him, most recently his dog “Fins.” He was fascinated by the otherworldly and ethereal. After years of travel, he was happiest when he was home. He was our world, and we’ll be telling “Glenn/Dad/Dusty/Granddad” tales forever.
He was an intellectual and an academic, and he was never not reading – oftentimes several books at once! He was a writer and poet; we just found this, his final poem, written in April:
Crossing the Bar
The eyes have closed.
The breath has settled in his chest.
He is no more.
