William “Bill” August Schaufler, 86, of Romeo, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022 surrounded by his family at McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens. He was born Sept. 29, 1935, the son of William and Helen (Temerowski) Schaufler, in Detroit.  He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Andary, on May 28, 1960 at St. Ambrose Church in Grosse Pointe.

Bill lived with his family in Tampa, Fla. until they moved to Romeo in 1949. He graduated from Romeo High School in 1953.   Bill worked at Michigan Rivet in various roles of production and supervision.    Bill was an active and dedicated member of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, proudly serving as usher for Saturday Mass.

he enjoyed his family farm at 36 Mile Road and Van Dyke.  He had a strong work ethic and remained active, even as age started to slow him down.  He was proud of the 1953 Ford Jubilee tractor that he bought when he graduated high school.  He was an avid gardener and loved being outdoors and the warmth of the sun. Bill listened to country and western music, watched western films and enjoyed Elvis, with whom he was proud to share the same birth year. He liked watching any Michigan sports team.  Bill was knowledgeable about cars and trucks and was able to name makes, models and years.  He was very fond of and proud to be from Romeo having a great memory for its history and the folks in the community.  A meal shared between family and friends brought him such joy.

Bill was a kind soul.  He never met a stranger.  When it came to the needs of others, he was always willing to help. Family and friends were most important to Bill, whether raising his four children, helping his grandchildren or socializing over a cup of coffee and a slice of pie; Bill always had time to listen.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann, of Washington Township; children, William Schaufler of Bruce Township, John (Melanie) Schaufler of Port Charlotte, Fla., Anne Marie (Steve) Hideg of Summerfield, Fla. and Jody DeSmit of Chesterfield Township, grandchildren, Justin Schaufler, Adam Schaufler, Tyler Cupp, Blake DeSmit, Chelsea Schaufler, Jada DeSmit and Ally Schaufler.
