MAY 25 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): The photo above is William Austin Burt of Washington Township. Burt moved to Washington Township in 1822 after building a mill in the Pontiac area for Alpheus Williams. The home he built for his family was located near the boat dock in Stony Creek Park. The area was flooded when the lake was created so the house is gone. Burt did build an octagon house in the area and a number of square homes with cupulas for family members. He was quite an inventor, designing one of the first typewriters. The description of it sounds similar to a Dymo Tape labeler, where each letter is dialed one at a time and printed on paper. He was unsuccessful in marketing the device. Burt served on the Michigan Territorial Legislature and was also a Macomb County judge. He is most famous for his surveying work in the lower and upper peninsulas. R. Beringer, Romeo Historical Society staff
