JUNE 1 ISSUE ANSWERS (photo to right): This display on “Our Toy Story” (toys at least 50 years old) is in the Romeo Historical Society’s archives museum. These Lego-like building bricks are American Bricks by Halsam Products. They were manufactured in 1939 and made of compressed wood fiber. Just like I did when growing up, your editor Larry Sobczak was familiar with them. (Neither Larry nor I were born in 1939.) The idea started in 1934 with rubber building bricks. Legos didn’t come around until 1961. Below is a list of predecessors to Legos. Visit the “Our Toy Story” and use the American Bricks and Elgos bricks to make something.
