JAN. 1 ISSUE ANSWERS: The Ford Romeo Engine Plant on 32 Mile Road opened about 1987 after the tractor plant closed in 1985. The engine facility was the same size as the 1985 tractor plant. The Engine plant assembles eight cylinder engines for the Ford Econoline, the Mustang and the Cobra car. The Cobra engines were hand built by a special team who signed their work making the engines special. The engine block in the photo is for the Mustang GT. It is cast aluminum with steel lined cylinder walls. The block was not cast here in Romeo as the old Model-T engines were. The engine was assembled in Romeo from blocks cast at another plan. The engine in the photo was donated May 12, 2008 by the Romeo Ford Engine Plant. Shaun Whitehead was the plant manager at the time. Ford Motor Company has been very supportive helping the Romeo Historical Society tell the Model-T and modern engine plant story. The Record Newspaper with headlines for Nov. 6-12, 2019 has the story about the closing of the Romeo Engine Plant written by Larry Sobczak, editor.
