MARCH 19 ISSUE ANSWERS: Arad’s Mill in Ray Township was turned over to his brother Green Freeman so Arad could retire to farming. Over the years a saw mill was added up stream. The mill and land was sold to other millers over time including, Fenton, John Smith, Oliver Patterson, Norman Crawford, Crissman and Frederick Wolcott. At the time Wolcott bought the mill, its business output had declined. The local settlement boasted only 25 inhabitants in 1885. The railroads were bypassing Ray. The mill was run by a 14 foot wide by 16 foot diameter breast wheel under the mill. The present wheel outside of the mill museum at Wolcott Mill Metropark is for display only. The original wheel was under the mill. The wheel produced only 30 horsepower at 25 RPM. Nearby mills were out producing Wolcott’s. In 1881 Wolcott ordered a James Leffel turbine and was very pleased with this new motive power. Later, during dry seasons, Wolcott added an internal combustion engine to supplement power.
