APRIL 23 ISSUE ANSWERS: This 1865 brick block of stores, just north of Starkweather Alley, contained three stores. The furthest south had three windows on the second floor. It is currently occupied by Starkweather Art Center. As I went through the collection of the Romeo Historical Society’s photos, I noticed that it was earlier a tailor shop. The center store with three windows (Main Street Grill) had a sign that said the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P grocery store.) It was also the location of Peerlees Restaurant. The store to the north next to the opera house was Mrs. Tedman’s Milliner shop, Chapoton’s Men’s Wear, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow Gifts and Home Furnishings and is currently the Romeo Printing store. This brick block was built before the opera house to the north. As a result, there were windows on the north side facing the house next door. When they built the opera house in 1869, the northern view was removed. Because of the many fires at the opera house, I feel this northernmost store was damaged. As a result, the facade of the third store has a new brick front and enlarged three windows on the second floor. R. Beringer, Romeo Historical Society Curator
