FEB. 7 ISSUE ANSWERS: The fireplace to the right is the same fireplace moved a half mile to the southwest in the current Romeo Middle School. Fortunately, it was saved when the old Romeo High/Junior/Middle school was recently razed on Prospect Street. The fireplace is now in the current Middle School library along with stained glass windows which were also saved. On Wednesday evening, March 28, 1928 the new Romeo High School was dedicated. This building was attached to the Romanesque style 1885 High School on the north side. This building was sandwiched between Chandler and Prospect streets. This new high school was equipped with a gym for physical education classes for all students. The gym could be converted to an auditorium holding 700 students with an overflow balcony holding 200. There was a stage at the north end of the gym. On the second floor was the English classroom with a raised stage for plays or public speaking classes. There were stained glass windows in this room which are now displayed in the current Middle School on West St. Clair Street. The business classes provided a group of new Remington typewriters, and a model banking room. Industrial/home economics rooms and shops were available for sewing, home economics and carpentry classes. Later the 1885 building to the south was razed to create room for a classroom extension and a new gym building was added to the north. The Maples building to the north was also eliminated. R.
