JAN. 7 ISSUE ANSWERS: The front room of the Romeo Historical Society Archives building tells the story of Romeo’s participation in the Underground Railroad as accurately as possible. The stories about this topic are often glamorized and misstated. The Romeo Historical Society curators feel it is our responsibility to try to get the stories correct. After several decades of research, and contact with Peter Lerrich’s relatives, our curators feel that we are portraying our findings accurately. The painting above is of Peter Lerrich, UGRR conductor in Shelby Township. We have been in contact with his relatives who supplied genealogical records and a diary written by Peter’s daughter, Libretta Green Lerrich, who tells the story in a very believable way. The family has provided the above oil painting of Peter painted by his daughter, Lillian. They have recently donated a beautiful sideboard signed by Peter’s wife, Sarah, that is on display in the Church Street museum along with Sarah’s monogramed dishes. The historical society feels that this story of Peter and his wife, Sarah, is accurate. The Romeo Historical Society will present a program at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20 in which the long past daughter of Sarah and Peter Lerrich will be interviewed. The story of this woman is based on her diary and nothing will be added. No, this is not a seance! We will have fun reliving this piece of Shelby Township history. It’s free. It will be held at 290 North Main Stret in Romeo at the RHS Arts and Archives museum.Correction: Last week’s article stated that President Grant appointed Cortez Fessenden to the post of U. S. Surveyor General. It was President James A. Garfield who appointed him to the position. The RHS always wants to record history accurately. Thank you to our readers. -Richard Beringer, Romeo Historical Society Curator
