DEC. 25 ISSUE ANSWERS: In May of 1985 I brought my sixth graders from Utica’s Dekeyser Elementary School to Romeo to do their “action research project” at the closing of the Romeo Tractor Plant. The students wanted to find out the economic effect of the plant’s closing on the Village of Romeo. After a full tour of the tractor plant, the students in a closed room interviewed the UAW staff to see their view of the closing. Then they separately interviewed the plant officials. They then went throughout the business district interviewing the business owners and village officials. They graphed their data and wrote a book about the topic. When I was writing this article for The Record, I read the very detailed story that the kids wrote and decided that you should hear it from them. Remembered it was written in 1985 at the plants closing by 11 year-olds. I was impressed by the details they collected in their research.
