JULY 30 ISSUE ANSWERS: These two buildings were built by John Dyer. The store on the left was built in 1855 and the right were built in 1851. This is what downtown Romeo looked like before the Civil War. These two buildings lasted until the early 1990s when they were torn down to make room for the Fifth Corner Restaurant. This restaurant was then sold to Younger’s Restaurant. This was one of the more recent buildings that local citizens wanted to save from demolition. The Craig Blacksmith Museum has the large pulley system that the meat market on the right used. To the right of the meat market was the alley that led to the rear of the block. The alley was sacrificed for a parking situation to the rear. The other three alleys in downtown are still present. The building across the alley was the hardware store discussed last week.
