NOV. 19 ISSUE ANSWERS: Jay Eldred was the owner of this Quick Service gas station. It was earlier owned by Fred Werth. During the 1930s, gas was selling for 20 cents a gallon. It even dropped to 10 cents in some areas during The Great Depression. This station was located on North Main Street in front of the MJC Marketplace store. Some of us that have lived in Romeo for a number of decades still refer to the building as the Thrift Shop which was run by the Congregational ladies. These ladies are the same ones who enabled the Romeo Historical Society to acquire the museum on Church Street. There have been many businesses in these connected two plus buildings. The Hi-Hat Restaurant, Totten Restaurant, Eileen’s Dress Shop, Trim’s Barbershop and the Thrift shop. It is appreciated that 1/8 of the original Romeo business district is still in its original wooden condition. Bricks have not yet attacked here. The 1860 brick and 1905 cement block architectural style had not arrived. Enjoy the view! Terri Schoenherr and Richard Beringer
